Deadwood is a small town located in the Black Hills of South Dakota west of Rapid City. It was a booming gold mining town in the late 1800’s. While the gold rush dried up significantly by the mid-1900’s, there was still one large local gold mine until 2002 located in neighboring Lead. As the town’s fortunes dwindled, it started to become a ghost town.
Local residents decided it was time to capitalize on the city’s claim to fame of the Wild West and legalize gambling. South Dakota voters agreed and passed a constitutional amendment legalizing casinos in the city limits of Deadwood. Deadwood was the first jurisdiction to legalize casino gambling outside of Nevada and Atlantic City. That occurred on November 1, 1989. The bet limits were initially just $5. This made it so that most of the games offered were slots and video poker. There were some table and poker games with a $5 max bet. Blackjack was the most common house game, while Seven Card Stud High/Low was the most popular poker game spread.
The bet limits were raised to $100 in 2000 and up to $1,000 in 2012. The $1,000 max bet requires special surveillance and cash requirements that few casinos adopted. This means the max bet at most Deadwood casinos remains $100. The maximum number of combined slots, video poker machines, poker tables, and table games allowed is 250 per casino.

Deadwood Blackjack Rules

Within the town of Deadwood, blackjack is among the most popular games. Though the rules are pretty different from other gambling towns such as Las Vegas or Atlantic City, they still attract visitors from all over. One of the drawbacks you’ll find when visiting is that no live Deadwood blackjack games allow a player to surrender or re-split aces. There are some Shuffle Master video blackjack machines that allow surrender however.
The best blackjack game in Deadwood is spread by Celebrity Casino and Hotel. The bet limit is $2-$25 and deals two decks with deep penetration. Players may double on any two cards and after splitting. The dealer stays on all 17’s. A six-deck game with the same rules is also available. Unfortunately, these great blackjack games are only open on Friday and Saturday night. The Lodge at Deadwood offers a six-deck game with the same rule that is available 24/7.
The worst blackjack in Deadwood is spread at Tin Lizzie and Cadillac Jack’s. It is a single deck game that pays 6-5 on a natural and only allows double down on 10 and 11.
