Betway Casino Review

Betway is an international online gambling brand. Formed in 2006, their operations cover a sportsbook, online casino, poker room, bingo, and more. The company has negotiated a range of high-profile sponsorship deals over the years, including Premier League football team West Ham, esports team Ninjas in Pyjamas, and the Grand National horse racing festival at Aintree Racecourse.

Betway boasts a strong rating on many third-party review sites and aggregators. Their online casino game selection and thorough licensing and auditing are stand-out plus points. On the downside, their bonuses often come with strict terms and high playthrough requirements. The Betway rewards system also ranges from not particularly generous at the casino to highly complex and confusing when it comes to poker.

License and legal status

Betway is licensed by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (license number: 000-039372-R-319367-010) and the Maltese Gaming Authority (MGA) under the number MGA/CL2/396. These two licenses allow the company to operate across the European Union and further afield. They are the two premier European licenses available, and they hold their licensees to the highest standards.

Betway’s casino games are also verified by eCOGRA, an industry-respected auditor of online casino gaming platforms. This means any Return-to-Player (RTP) statistics you see here are independently verified by a prestigious third-party organization.

Betway Casino Games Review

Betway’s online casino selection covers over 330 titles. This is an extensive collection that puts them firmly in the top tier of online casinos, although they do not challenge the biggest ones just yet. Betway’s casino games include:

  • 274 slots
  • 8 roulette tables
  • 26 blackjack games
  • 15 video poker games
  • 11 other games including Keno, Baccarat, and Bingo

Betway’s entire casino section is provided by respected developer Microgaming.

Microgaming has been operating for over 24 years and has gathered an impressive array of pop-culture, film, and music licenses. Their slots include such games as Playboy: Gold, Game of Thrones, Jurassic Park, Moby Dick, and Hitman. They also offer some of the industry’s most popular progressive jackpot titles, such as Mega Moolah and King Cashalot.

Incidentally, Mega Moolah paid out the world record jackpot to a Betway customer. Jonathan Heywood of Cardiff, Wales scooped just over £17 million in 2015 – the official Guinness World Record to this day.

For players looking to maximize long-term returns, the highest RTP game Betway offers is Microgaming’s single-deck blackjack

The only disappointing aspect of Betway’s casino selection is roulette. Some online casinos run as many roulette tables as they do blackjack tables, whereas Betway only features a third as many. Aside from that, the company offers a top-tier selection of casino games.

Live casino

Betway’s live casino is exclusively powered by Evolution Gaming, one of the top providers in the live casino arena. Betway runs 70 of Evolution’s titles across blackjack, roulette, poker, and baccarat. Also included is Evolution’s spinning wheel-of-fortune-type game, Dream Catcher, and live roulette streamed from the Hippodrome Casino in London or the Dragonara Casino in Malta.

Betway also hosts Danish, Russian, and Arabic speaking live dealer roulette tables and a football-themed hi-lo game.

Lastly, the company has taken advantage of Evolution’s private table technology capabilities by investing in eight blackjack tables (and one roulette) that come decked out with the Betway color scheme and logo. Aside from the visual flair, these table games also facilitate exclusive offers for live casino players.

Betway Bonuses & Promotions

Betway Casino offers a 200% match welcome bonus on deposits up to £50, with a minimum deposit of £10 needed to trigger the offer. However, this bonus cash comes with a relatively high wagering requirement of 50x. There is also an extensive list of casino games wherein bets do not count towards the bonus playthrough. The contributing percentages are:

  • 100% on all slots games
  • 8% on all table pokers, all Roulettes, all Video/Power pokers (except All Aces and Jacks or Better Video/Power Pokers), all Blackjacks (except Classic Blackjack)
  • 0% on all other games

Note that you can request to withdraw your cash balance at any time; however, if you do so, your bonus balance will be forfeited.

VIP program

Betway Casino offers a dual points-based reward system – plus points and tier points. Tier points, as the name suggests, move you up and down loyalty tiers. Here is a list of the five available tiers and the number of points you need to accumulate in one month to achieve them:

  • Blue
  • Bronze: 2,000
  • Silver: 5,000
  • Gold: 25,000
  • Platinum: 75,000
  • Black: 1,000,000

You earn five tier points for every £10 you bet, which means you would have to wager £1,000 to reach Bronze tier and £500,000 to reach Black.

Plus points, on the other hand, are a bit mysterious. We did a lot of digging into the FAQs and Terms and Conditions but could not find information on the number of plus points you receive per currency spent.

Betway only reveals that “the type of game and your current tier determines how many plus points you receive.” They also state that when you reach 5,000 points, you can start exchanging them at a rate of 5,000 per £10 casino credits. These credits come with a 30x wagering requirement and a maximum win of £50. All in all, this is not a very transparent or generous system from Betway.

Betway Sportsbook Review

Markets and odds

Betway offers 35 different sports markets, which is less than you can find at the top-end of online sportsbooks. Aside from popular sports such as football, tennis, rugby, horse racing and, golf, Betway also offers a few more niche markets, such as Gaelic football, futsal, and the “Finnish Baseball” game of pesäpallo.

Also available is a dedicated esports section where you can bet on competitive electronic gaming titles like League of Legends, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The array of special bets at Betway is also impressive, spanning ten different sections, each with a unique set of sub-markets. Punters can place a bet on anything from who the next James Bond actor will be to who will win Celebrity Big Brother or have the most subscribers on Youtube on January 1st, 2019.

If there is something you’d like to bet on that Betway does not offer, you can take advantage of their ongoing #betyourway campaign. Simply reach out to Betway via Twitter and let them know the bet you’d like to place, and they will do their best to give you relevant odds. The company also occasionally offers exclusive promotions to attract #betyourway publicity.

Welcome promotion

Betway Sports gives out a 100% match free bet up to £30 to all new customers. The minimum deposit needed to trigger the bonus is £10, which must be wagered once to activate the free bet. This qualifying wager must be placed on an event with 1.75 odds or higher. The free bet expires after seven days, and any winnings made from it do not return the stake.

Only players who deposited using a credit/debit card or PayPal are eligible for this promotion.

VIP program

Betway does not offer a VIP program or reward system for sportsbook customers.

Betway Poker Room Review

Betway Poker is part of the Microgaming Poker Network, or MPN.

MPN has been around for around 15 years. In 2005, they were a rising force on the European poker scene, but a series of bankruptcies amongst poker rooms using their network eroded trust in the brand.

MPN went from one of the top three poker networks in Europe (by traffic) to a much lower 11th on the list. The company has somewhat recovered and tends to average 420 to 700 active players a day, putting them around sixth or seventh place. This is a shame as MPN has innovated and grown consistently throughout its lifespan.

Microgaming Poker Network was the first major poker room to introduce anonymous tables in an effort to prevent fish-hunting – a practice where an experienced punter follows a particularly weak player around the tables and takes their money. They were also the first poker network to introduce video game console-inspired achievements as a reward system.

Today, the company boasts a much more respected network of sites that use their software. Some MPN poker rooms that share a player pool with Betway customers include Grosvenor, Unibet, 32Red, and Betsafe.

Poker Games

Betway Poker offers Hold ‘Em, Omaha, and Blaze poker in both cash table and tournament formats. You can also play casino games in the instant poker client. Cash game buy-ins range from £2 all the way up to a massive £10,000 – although you are extremely unlikely to find more than a few players above the £2,000 mark. Around 80% of players stick to the lowest buy-in tables.

Betway currently hosts around 40 tournaments a day on weekdays and up to 60 or 70 on weekends. Buy-ins range from £0.10 all the way up to £300 or more. There are also monthly tournaments with tens of thousands in cash prizes on offer. Some of these can be entered exclusively by winning qualifying events held throughout the month, so it’s worth keeping an eye on weekday tournaments if you plan on working up to the big boys.

VIP program

Betway Poker runs a reward scheme, the Betway Poker Loyalty Club, which operates on a points-based system called Plus Points. For every £1 you spend on tournament or rake fees, you receive ten Plus Points.

This is where things get confusing – Betway does a poor job of explaining this system in their promotional literature or terms and conditions.

You need the following number of Plus Points, also referred to as tier points in the guide, to reach each level:

  • Bronze: 0
  • Silver: 250-749
  • Gold: 750-1,499
  • Black: 1,500-1,999

From there, some combination of three different points (Betway does not specify how you can collect them) grants you poker loyalty points, which can then be exchanged at a rate of £10 for 1,000 points.

However, depending on your level, a varying number of points is exchanged in reality – the rest of your 1,000 points can only be used to pay for tournament entry. This system is highly convoluted. Consider the following scenario:

Imagine you had earned 1,400 points and are thus a Gold-tier player. If you exchanged 1,000 – the minimum amount – for £10 cash, you would only be charged 667 points, and the remaining 330 points would be leftover. However, you couldn’t then earn 670 more points to make another £10. Your leftover points would only be usable as tournament entry credits, and you would need to earn 1,000 points again before being allowed to make another cash exchange.

Betway software

Betway’s subsites feature a very cohesive theme. The Betway brand and style is well represented throughout, with just a few minor discrepancies in coloring. The software itself is nothing innovative or unique, but it’s perfectly usable. However, we noticed a few broken links when digging deeper into the site’s help and information sections.

All of Betway’s sections can be accessed via browser on desktop or mobile. The poker client is also downloadable for desktop devices. Both the sportsbook and casino have dedicated apps for iOS and Android, but Betway Poker does not.

The poker software is probably the most visually enticing, with bright and bold icons set out in an easy-to-use design. However, all MPN-powered poker rooms went through the same Microgaming visual update in 2017, so this win cannot be attributed to Betway.

Betway deposits and withdrawals

The only four deposit options available at Betway Casino are:

  • VISA
  • MasterCard
  • Neteller
  • PayPal

The minimum deposit made via Neteller and PayPal are very high at £50.

All of these methods, plus bank transfer, can be used to make a withdrawal. The minimum withdrawal amount using any method at Betway is £10. Money requested on a Friday is not processed until the following Monday. All methods remain pending for 24-48 hours, and withdrawals can be easily reversed during the pending process.
