2018 TicketGuardian 500 (Phoenix) Odds

When NASCAR descends upon ISM Raceway for the TicketGuardian 500 this Sunday, there will be a few names to keep an eye on. For any number of reasons, some of the West Coast natives of NASCAR seem to perform better near home than they do anywhere else. Kevin Harvick, who graced Victory Lane last Sunday in Las Vegas, is one of those names and will like his odds of getting another victory and perhaps two in a row.

Harvick and four other West Coast born drivers have accounted for a total of 33 victories on West Coast tracks—which includes ISM Raceway, Las Vegas, and Auto Club Speedway in California. Though he is now retired, that count would bump up to 39 victories if we included Jeff Gordon’s six. The fact of the matter is that West Coast drivers seem to have an edge there, and though no one can pinpoint why that is so, it is something we will be looking at heading into Sunday’s race.

The Favorites

Kevin Harvick (+200)

After reading the above and knowing that Kevin Harvick will be entering Sunday’s TicketGuardian 500 on the back of a victory in Las Vegas, it is difficult to consider Harvick anything other than a favorite. Even more remarkable is that last weekend’s victory marked the 100th such triumph for Harvick across three different NASCAR series.

Harvick had a tough go of things in 2017, but since he has ditched his Chevy for a Ford things seem to be looking up. Having won at Phoenix in both 2015 and 2016, Harvick and his Stewart Haas Racing team will consider themselves favorites to get back into Victory Lane for the second consecutive week and for the third time in the last four years.

Kyle Busch (+550)

Kyle Busch has been ultra competitive in 2018 NASCAR competition, even despite a wreck that ended his Las Vegas run early. He is the second favorite to win this week in Phoenix, and he is a threat on almost every short track that he runs. He is the outright favorite to win the XFinity race at ISM Raceway, sitting at +125; just about the biggest favorite you could be in any NASCAR sanctioned event, at any level.

WCI Dark Horses

Martin Truex (+850)

The story of Martin Truex at Phoenix is one that is worth paying attention to. Truex was last year’s NASCAR points champion and has historically performed well at ISM Raceway, especially throughout the 2017 season. Last year, Truex posted 11th and third place finishes at the two races held in Phoenix and has finished in the top-10 there on a staggering eight different occasions. The real reason Truex is considered to be one of the favorites is due to the fact that he has been winning races left and right since last season. In fact, since the middle of last season, Truex has fairly consistently won one out of every three or four races he’s entered. These are truly remarkable statistics, the likes of which you may not be so wise to bet again.

Ryan Newman (+5000)

Ryan Newman does not win many races, but he did win at Phoenix last year and is up there amongst the favorites to repeat. Of the three races run so far in the 2018 season, Newman has been a true competitor in the opener at Daytona (finishing 8th) as well as last week at Las Vegas (where he finished 11th). It takes a lot to transition from a top-10 to the winner’s circle, but Newman has proven he is more than capable of doing just that, especially at Phoenix. The oddsmakers may not necessarily think Newman is up for the job, but he has a lot of potential, and a bet on him has the potential to pay out nicely.
